Hey, I am Tom a sole trader accountant in Lichfield, serving clients all over the UK.
When setting up a business, registering as a sole trader or ‘self-employed’ can be the first port of call. But it can be a daunting experience knowing what your commitments are, what expenses to claim, when to register for VAT? Ahh the list can be endless.

What is a sole trader?
A sole trader is someone who who runs their own business as an individual, self-employed, unlike a Limited Company, where you are separate entities.
One of the commitments of being a sole trader you must submit a yearly tax return to HMRC, which is due online on 31st January following the previous 5th April tax year.
Meaning you need to keep track of your sales, expenses, and profit for your business.
A sole trader is more of a simple business structure, with less commitments than a Limited Company. Being a sole trader can be less tax efficient than a Limited Company as you’re taxed on all the income from the business in the period.

I wasn't sure if I needed to speak to an accountant, but having decided to contact Tom I'm so glad I did.I was worried my questions might be too basic but he was so helpful, and gave me tips about using the Government Gateway so it no longer seem so overwhelming.You don't need to earn a big income to find an accountant helpful!I have now done a couple of things with HMRC to ensure my self assesment will be more straight forward and less daunting.If you are thinking of contacting Tom, I can't recommend him highly enough.A very knowledgeable and patient accountant - so good at explaining the whole process!
