Mentoring for accountants and bookkeepers

When I started working in an accountancy practice there was a partner who took a shot on me when I retrained at 30. The first thing he said was, “You’re not our typical apprentice”.

I wasn’t. I was older, I had a flat, a partner, and no accounting experience but a hunger to retrain quickly and I am grateful for that opportunity. I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have that break.

Over the following three years, he supported me in training, salary negotiations and gaining valuable client experience which helped me learn and develop.

Setting up an accountancy business

Fast forward 3 years, when I had the seed of an idea to set up my practice. I reached out to a lady in Lancaster who I found on LinkedIn. She was running a successful accountancy business, AAT qualified with a similar employment history, which gave me the belief I could do it too.

I had so many reservations and concerns in hindsight. I was low on confidence, but speaking to her, and asking questions helped enormously. We are still in contact today, two years later.

I am now building a 6-figure lifestyle business, choosing freedom over finances and sharing the results on the way. I haven’t got everything worked out, but I have made the jump from practice to running my own business and have learned a lot on the way.

Accountant mentor

Role models and mentors are so important.

It can take someone who has already been there to show you the path.

I know it can be a lonely place, having goals or a dream but finding it hard to speak to the right person to get your questions answered.

Because you can’t exactly ask your boss ‘Hey, how do I set up an accountancy practice?’.

You need an external sounding board.

Mentoring for accountants and bookkeepers

I am passionate about helping other accountants and bookkeepers to pass on the help I received and pay it forward.

I have decided to offer free mentoring sessions for bookkeepers and accountants to support you on your journey.

You could be at any stage of your career, but I can help, especially if you’re thinking about or have taken the step to setting up your own business.

I haven’t got loads of time with a business and baby, but I can mentor one person at a time and when someone moves on, I will help the next person.

If you’re local, we can meet for a coffee, but if not, we can have a Zoom call and I can help you get to where you want to be.

To your success,

Tom
